Kathleen is a Florida Supreme Court Certified Family Mediator, Qualified Parent Coordinator (7th Circuit), and Collaborative Divorce Professional.
The focus of my practice is on alternative dispute resolution, conflict resolution, and collaborative practice to help support children and families during periods of transition. My practice focuses on Co-Parent Counseling, Family Mediation, Parenting Coordination, and the Collaborative Divorce Process. My goal as a mediator and collaborative mental health professional is to decrease stress that can occur for families during high conflict separation or divorce. I work to teach parents that conflict in their parenting relationship is very detrimental to the emotional health of their children. As a professional, my focus has been working with families that are in high conflict co-parenting relationships. This includes situations where abuse or domestic violence has occurred in the family system. It is imperative to the emotional health of the children that they feel supported by their parents, that their feelings and voices are heard, and that they are allowed to love both parents freely without pressure from the other parent. Please feel free to schedule your intake to meet Kathleen Coughlin at a time that is convenient for your family.
“Co-Parenting is not a competition. It’s a collaboration of two homes working together with the best interest of the child at heart. Work for your kids not against them.” – Dr. Anne Brown
I encourage families to keep the needs of their children as a priority in all the choices and decisions that they make. When parents are going through the divorce process, negative emotions may occur between parents. As parents it is important to seek your own emotional support so that you can manage your feelings in a healthy way. I also work with parents that have experienced extended periods of separation from their children by providing reunification counseling.
Prior to opening my practice in Florida in 2018, I previously owned a behavioral health group counseling practice in Pennsylvania which I started in 2001. I have worked with local courts to assist families that are struggling to co-parent together. In starting my practice in Florida, I wanted to develop a safe place where families can come to help process highly stressful situations so that their discord does not have a long-term impact on the children. I have been focusing my training and experience in supporting families as they agree to work together to make decisions that are in the best interest of their children. My specialty is helping children and families navigate through the process of separation and divorce. I work to help parents see that placing children in the middle of conflict is extremely detrimental to the child. “The sign of great parenting is not the child’s behavior. The sign of truly great parenting is the parent’s behavior.” – Andy Smithson
I view counseling as a collaborative process. In sessions, we will focus on exploring your feelings and life challenges. During therapy you can increase your level of self-understanding, learn more effective ways to cope with feelings, and develop improved coping skills to help manage your emotions. You will learn how to restructure negative thoughts into positive thoughts, develop creative techniques to reduce stress, and increase self-care strategies to achieve your goals. My hope is that anyone that comes through our doors will find clarity, hope and purpose. The goal of counseling is to help you begin to lead a happier and healthier life. We stand ready to walk this journey of self-discovery with you.
My focus is on helping you to empower yourself to become stronger and more determined to reach the goals that you set. The best way to start is to begin to make decisions that are in your best interest and most importantly make yourself a priority. I work with clients in education, healthcare, emergency response, & military personnel as they navigate to balance their personal and professional lives. I have a speciality providing support to families that are going through a separation or divorce. In our group, we provide co-parent counseling, reunification counseling, parenting coordination, family mediation, and supervised visitation to support family members as they adjust to life changes.
